Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of study was to understand the clinical practice experience of nursing students in psychiatric departments.

Methods: A phenomenological method of Van Mannens perspective was adopted in this study.. The participants of this study consisted of 11 3rd year nursing college students. Data were collected from April 22th to May 31st, 2013. A method of research adapted was Hermeneutic Phenomenological Method of van Manen. Data analysis were classified on line-by-line approach and highlighting approach and then essential themes and thematic statement were expressed so that the experiences and existences of search participants can be described sufficiently.

Results: The three thematic statements in this study were as follows; Realizing the importance of therapeutic environment. learning about the importance of nurses¡¯ competency of clinical practice and recognizing the co-operative relationships between nursing knowledge and clinical practice.

Conclusion: After clinical practice in psychiatric departments, nursing students changed their minds about mental patients and psychiatric hospitals. Nursing students realized the importance of therapeutic environment as well as the relationships between nurses" competency and clinical practice.
